Frequently Asked Questions

Please take a moment to read this before hiring Lisa as your personal coach.

How did you become a Life Coach?

For me, it was a result of reflecting on my life experiences and wanting to share my passion with others. I feel passionate about helping people create a life of authenticity and purpose, no matter where they find themselves in the world. I feel everything I have done has brought me to this place in my life and has been an important part of my training to become a Life Coach. Especially living and working in different countries has given me valuable experience and insights into how to adjust to different cultures that enable me to help others in the same situation. In addition to my cross-cultural life experiences, I also hold a certificate from the Coach Training Alliance and I am a member of the International Coach Federation.

Who are your clients?

I work with individuals and families who have to adjust to life in a different country. Because I have been in their shoes many times, I know first hand about the challenges and frustrations especially at the beginning of the adjustment period. I also know first hand about the personal rewards if people manage to fully embrace their cross-cultural experience.

I support parents who want to raise multilingual and multicultural children. Together we create an authentic language plan to keep bilingualism going for the long term. In addition, I share my own experience and insights that I gained while raising my own children with more than one language. They are now young adults and greatly appreciate being bilingual and multicultural.

Do you only work with people in cultural transition?

No, absolutely not. I'm able to work with people in all kinds of life transitions. I believe if we go through life honoring the seasons of our life we will create a life of balance and purpose. By listening deeply to your story and by asking powerful questions I will help you to gain a deep understanding of why you want to move forward in your life. You will come up with your own unique, personal answer that will give you the motivation and insight to take confident and authentic steps to create the life you wish and deserve.

How are you different from other Life Coaches?

In addition to my skills as a certified coach I offer personal experience and expertise in what my clients go through. I know from personal experience what it takes to successfully adjust to a new culture and create the life you want in the new environment. In addition to being an active listening partner who provides an outside perspective I also share resources and tools that helped me adjust to different countries and so minimize the "cultural shock" for my clients and help them to fully embrace their cross-cultural experience. It is such a joy for me to see my clients grow in the process. By being exposed to a new culture they gain self-knowledge, and deeper insight into their own as well as the new culture. Through coaching they take themselves and what they want more seriously, and are able to take more effective and focused actions faster to become successful in the new environment.

With what type of personality do you work best?

I have an optimistic and open-minded outlook on life. I believe what we focus on will expand. I also believe that every life experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. Because of my beliefs I work best with people who also want to learn and grow and are willing to put the necessary work into their personal improvement.

Who is NOT a good candidate for coaching?

Coaching is not going to work for individuals who are unwilling to take responsibility for themselves and want others to provide solutions for them.

To check your readiness for coaching, please take this quiz.

How do coaching sessions work?

Most coaching is done over the telephone. Although initially some people think they would prefer face-to-face coaching, after a few sessions most discover that coaching over the phone is more efficient and usually more focused, because there is less distraction. I am an international coach and coach clients all around the world. I offer coaching over the phone, Skype, via email or a combination, whatever works best for both of us. If the geographical area allows I also do face-to-face coaching.

What do you expect from your client?

As my client, you play an active role in the success of your coaching experience. Coaching is a co-creative relationship, where the focus is completely on you. This relationship is an alliance between two equal partners for the purpose of meeting your needs. In order for you to get the most out of our coaching-relationship you must:

  • Clearly communicate what you would like from each session.
  • Be honest with me and yourself.
  • Be punctual about paying fees, calling in, and preparing for sessions.
  • Be open to new ideas and perspectives.
  • Take responsibility for your own decisions, actions, and feelings.
  • Let me know if something is not working for you.

Can I sample your work before I commit to a coaching relationship?

Yes. I offer a free "get acquainted" session. This is an opportunity for us to get to know each other better and see if we have the right chemistry to work together. At this point I can also answer any additional questions you may have. This free "get acquainted" session can happen by phone, by email, or in person, whatever works best for both of us.

How long do people work with a Life Coach?

This all depends on where you are, where you want to be, and how quickly you want to get there. I recommend committing to at least a three month initial coaching program. This is generally the amount of time it takes to create lasting change and accomplish your goals. Anything less than nine sessions is just a quick fix. Clients generally stay with a personal life coach from anywhere between six to eighteen months.

The coaching relationship continues as long as there is benefit for the client.

How much does life coaching cost?

For more information please visit my services page.

How do I pay for my coaching sessions?

I prefer credit card payments via Pay Pal at Prior to our session (at least 24 hours in advance) please send payment to Lisa Velazquez at If payment is late, we have to reschedule your session.

How do I start my coaching sessions?

Call or email me to set up a "get acquainted" session. When all your questions are answered and we decide to enter into a coaching relationship I will send you a Welcome Packet with more information and certain exercises to complete before our first session.

I'm not ready to get started yet, but I'd like more information on adjusting to a new culture, on raising multilingual children, or on other life transitions.

Are there professional standards for coaches?

Yes. The International Coach Federation has a Code of Ethics, which I always adhere to. Click here to read or download the ICF Code of Ethics.
